Note about the creation of Michigan Mania

Michigan Mania is a product of so many things I love. It consists of content about the University of Michigan, a place that I am so deeply passionate about, and allows me to talk about all of the things I love here as a student.

Beyond the school itself, though, creating the magazine has given me the space to reflect on my time at Michigan, and think about how I would advise those who are and will be following in my footsteps. Within the magazine, I’ve stored advice, commentary, and personal experiences (both my own and others’) for my readers. I’ve been able to get my friends involved, so their contributions to the magazine are through me and through their own thoughts and ideas. Their involvement and impact on the magazine makes it all the more special to me.

Doing the research for the magazine provided me with a lot of interesting perspectives on the genre and the content with which I was engaging. I learned that so much goes into creating a magazine, and what surprised me the most was how intricate the design elements would be. I spent hours on each page, making sure every word and picture was aligned to my liking. This may say more about my working style and obsessiveness, but it was clear to me that nothing in any of my inspiration magazines was done by accident. Every arrow and extra element was deliberate, and I took that approach with Michigan Mania.

My most used models for this issue were J-14 and Seventeen magazines, with inspiration taken from lots of other magazines as well. I love that I was able to bring in pieces of something that brought me so much joy as a kid, and use them to help me express the things that bring me joy now.

I would love to see this issue printed, and I hope that I can make that happen at some point. For now, though, the online version here on this website will be the place to find it. I hope it brings you as much joy to read it as it did me to write it. I think, after completing the project, I am most excited about the fact that I will be able to come back to this issue for years to come, and it will serve as a time capsule for all of the things that were important to me at this point in my life.
